Successful companies and assertive leaders go hand in hand. Just think of Steve Jobs and Apple or Jack Welch and GE. But what exactly distinguishes theses leaders from a choleric football coach? Here you can find the difference between assertiveness and aggressiveness.
Assertive and aggressive
“The basic difference between being assertive and being aggressive is how our words and behavior affect the rights and well-being of others” – Sharon Anthony Bower
In other words, assertiveness is described as ‘a form of communication in which needs or wishes are stated clearly with respect for oneself and the other person in the communication’
Aggressiveness on the other hand is described as “a form of physical or verbal behavior leading to self-assertion; it is often angry and destructive and intended to be injurious, physically or emotionally, and aimed at domination of one person by another”.
Here are some examples which show the difference in these behaviors and how they can manifest in the workplace environment.

Be honest: Are you sometimes bored or even frustrated at work? These are just two common reasons for “non-conformance”. The expression “non-conformance” covers all the reasons why people fail to conform at work. There is no one simple reason for non-conformance and hence no way of predicting who will misbehave, when, and why. However, there are some common categories of non-conformance in which you might be interested. Let’s take a look!
Rule-Breaking
According to psychologist Gerald Mar the reasons why people break rules at work, even though they know the rules and could obey them if they wanted, can be complex. They include:
a. to express their individuality in the face of an impersonal organisation
b. to express their anger and frustration
c. for the sheer hell of it
d. to show off to others
e. to see if they can get away with it.

Have you ever been judged for the color of your skin, gender, age, religious beliefs, or nationality? In other words: Have you ever been the victim of discrimination? If so then you are one of many. Especially when it comes to being hired but also being fired this topic is often put on the agenda – by the employee or the employer.
This blog post aims at analyzing discrimination during the recruiting process from an employer’s perspective. Let’s take a look!
Different kinds of discrimination
There are 3 kinds of discrimination: prejudice, direct discrimination, and indirect discrimination. Prejudice, or pre-judging, is “a disposition to think, feel and behave negatively towards other people on the basis of group membership”. Direct discrimination occurs when we prevent people from applying for, being shortlisted for, being considered for and being appointed for a position on the basis of group membership. And indirect discrimination occurs when conditions exist which make it harder for people from any group to compete equally with others. Depending on where you are, one, two, or all three of these may be illegal.

Let’s start with a question: Which of these career paths do you feel you are following at the moment?
  • Are you just getting by?
  • Are you getting on?
  • Or are you getting ahead?
  • How do you take control of your career? A good place to start is to think about how careers develop. For many people, careers feel like they are just happening to them. Perhaps they’re just getting by, doing little to influence which career paths they might take. How can you avoid that, perhaps by putting things in place to help you do more than get by?  Getting on and getting ahead? This article is based on the free eBook "Careering Ahead - Getting by, getting on or getting ahead?"

The entrepreneur’s 4 most important attributes

One of the best non-business definitions is still one that was devised 37 years ago by Prof. Howard Stevenson of the Harvard Business School. He defined entrepreneurship as:
“The pursuit of opportunity without regard to the resources currently controlled”
This definition does not mean that people take unnecessary risks. However, it does mean that entrepreneurs don’t fall at the first hurdle when they reach an obstacle. Rather they will look at ways to resolve or circumvent the problem. Where most people see a problem then the entrepreneur will see an opportunity.
The willingness to take risks is only one of the attributes an entrepreneur needs. Here are the 4 most important elements of an entrepreneur’s mindset. Take a look!
    Vision
For an entrepreneur to be optimistic they need to have a belief in what they wish to achieve and that in turn requires a vision. That vision is one that may well need to be articulated because often entrepreneurs cannot work alone and need support of various kinds. An entrepreneur needs people working with him or her on something with no guarantee of success so they have to believe the vision.
